Hugh has been playing in bands since his teens. He started learning piano as a youth, and finally made the logical progression to guitar in high school, where he formed his first band, The Recliners, and failed at impressing girls. He took guitar lessons in an attempt to fix this.

Hugh then moved to university in Brisbane, where he began teaching guitar, and learning drums, in a desperate attempt to seduce some guitarists to take pity and jam with him. In an effort to prolong the time between school and real life he took a music production course as an elective, and finally formed The Liar’s Chair. Hugh still has no luck with women.
